If you're looking for the best locations for family photos in Charlotte, NC, read below to learn about five of my favorite venues. They are each unique and offer a variety of backdrops for your yearly family photo sessions. Each of these are tried and true and have been on my personal location list for years.
I don't send clients options without putting them to the test so that I can confidently shoot there and guide my families easily through. I prefer to visit places that won't be overly crowded but of course understand there are certain times of the year (think prom season; fall/christmas card season) that are bustling, so Im always considering what kind of distractions or sharing we may run into.
Narrowing down to just two images for each spot was a nearly impossible task but hopefully the list below will offer a nudge in the right direction for your personal preferences! Don't forget to account for seasonal changes. Winter in NC is often bare trees and brown grass and summer is lots of green (which I personally love). There's also the sunset times (could be pretty late for young ones in the summer) but your photographer will be able to walk you through a good game plan for your own needs and interests!

Midtown Park in the heart of Charlotte is such a popular spot from engagement sessions to family photos. It's open green space shows off gorgeous golden light and the ever changing seasons each stand out from bright blooms to a soft fall feel. There is a lovely bridge that feels so private and serene and a wide fountain down a large path just a block away. There are times when the skyline is easy to view but with the constant construction, it's not always guaranteed. Parking is usually best found in the garage by Trader Joe's.
Marvin Effird Park is just south of Charlotte in Waxhaw and has been one of my favorite spots for years. It is a huge property with something for everyone. It's got a picturesque barn, tree lines that allow such a pretty golden hour light, and lots of spring, summer, and fall blooms for lots of color. There is a big grass field in the back (and a pond that I haven't personally ventured to, but have noticed on the map).
Another bonus for families: there's a unique playset for kids for after photos!
The UNCC Garden is a magical spot in the late spring and early summer. The whole garden is filled with color and is easy to navigate but feels so spacious. It is one of those places that has such a variety of backgrounds without much walking which is a huge plus in any session type. I can't really speak to the parking situation but I will say I've never gotten a note or any upset looks over parking in the cul de sac area behind the garden...
Anne Springs Greenway is another spot just south of Charlotte that is well worth the drive. There's a handful of entrances that all allow photography (however, there is a fee to be aware of) and the options are truly endless. What a photographers paradise!
Mint Museum Randolph is a popular spot for good reason. The paved paths and seasonal blooms are too good to miss. It's got large established trees that give a classic feel. Wide open grassy spots along with little nooks make it an easy choice for a lot of families since it offers a good little variety without a lot of hiking around. With multiple options to use such as a fountain, garden, benches, and stone steps, this location has stayed on my list for years.
